The Crown by Kirk Westaway, Fairmont Jakarta

Bahasa l English

The Michelin Guide is widely recognized, especially within the high-end dining world. Although Jakarta has yet to be included in its listings, the city is home to several notable fine dining establishments, including Crown by Kirk Westaway. But who is he? Kirk Westaway is a British chef best known for leading the 2 Michelin-starred JAAN by Kirk Westaway in Singapore.
The hotel’s newest restaurant concept is set to launch around mid-2025. Located on the 22nd floor, it offers sweeping views of Jakarta from above. The elegant interior features rich, dark tones and soaring ceilings, creating a distinctly majestic ambiance. At the heart of the bar stands a sheep statue, an element often found in British architectural design, symbolizing fertility and the abundance of a farming nature. Meanwhile, the plush sofa seating enhances the space with a sense of comfort and relaxed sophistication.
While the restaurant typically offers a set menu, I opted to try a selection of à la carte dishes, many of which closely mirror the items available in the tasting menu. Staying true to its fine dining concept, attention to detail is evident in every element, including the presentation of the welcome bread. Served on a stone-shaped plate, the plating is strikingly aesthetic and sets the tone for the experience to come.
The first starter was the Wagyu Steak Tartare (IDR 300,000). Overall, the menu leans toward classic British dishes reinterpreted with modern techniques, resulting in refined, contemporary plates built on quality ingredients. The raw wagyu beef was exceptionally fresh, seasoned just right to let its natural richness shine. Meanwhile, the clean, slightly crisp notes from the charred leek emulsion added depth and elevated the overall flavor profile.

While steak is the main highlight here, with several cuts to choose from, I opted for something different, the Atlantic Halibut (IDR 625,000), which immediately caught my attention. It turned out to be the right decision. The halibut was beautifully cooked, with a firm yet delicate texture, paired with a rich lemon butter sauce that added depth. The addition of amaebi prawns brought a subtle sweetness and an extra layer of umami, making the dish truly satisfying.

For sides, there’s an addition to complement your main, including salad, chips, and other accompaniments to suit your preference.

For dessert, I tried the Gin & Tonic (IDR 135,000). With its intriguing name and elegant presentation, it almost resembles a cocktail. The dish takes inspiration from a classic British-style granita, featuring refreshing notes of pomelo and orange, served icy cold with a hint of gin. While the concept is unique and visually appealing, I found the gin to be a bit overpowering, leaving a slightly bitter aftertaste that detracted from the overall enjoyment.
Overall, the dinner experience here was truly memorable, thanks not only to the impressive dishes but also to the excellent service. I chose not to go for the set menu, as the offerings were quite similar to those available à la carte. If you’ve dined at JAAN by Kirk Westaway, you’ll likely recognize Kirk Westaway’s signature style, contemporary, refined, and thoughtfully complex. For a full dining experience from starter to dessert, you can expect to spend at least IDR 1,000,000 per person.
